What Makes USM Different?

USM's Master's in Counseling Psychology isn't like every other program. Our curriculum makes us distinct. Regardless of the track you choose, our rigorous program provides you training in key areas of professional development, which augment traditional counseling coursework: psychopathology, psychopharmacology, neuropsychology and cognitive processes, and administration and interpretation of both cognitive and personality assessments.

USM鈥檚 expert faculty offer 1-on-1 mentoring and advanced insights into the behavioral sciences. You鈥檒l have the opportunity to train alongside licensed professional counselors and therapists at premier mental health providers that specialize in adults, children, private practice, and hospital services, including:

Requirements

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for full (regular) admission to the graduate counseling psychology program at the 花椒直播.

A bachelor鈥檚 degree from an accredited institution, with a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75 (on a
4.0 scale)
Completion of undergraduate courses in general or introductory psychology; developmental psychology;
psychological disorders; one course in social psychology or personality psychology; and an introductory
statistics course, all completed with a minimum of a 鈥淏鈥� (3.0) average (exceptions may be made if the student
can demonstrate the ability needed to be successful in a graduate psychology program through other
application materials)

To apply, you'll submit:

A completed application and $25 application fee
Official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate work and degree conferral
Three professional recommendations addressing academic performance and specific dispositions
Personal statement discussing future vocational goals, reasons for wishing to be in the program, and relevant
characteristics and/or experiences that support being effective in their future profession
An interview (in-person or virtual) with the Graduate Psychology program director and/or faculty

Admission is competitive, and openings are limited. Admission is based on credentials and the availability of openings in the programs. A student not selected for admission may update their application materials and reapply during a future admissions period.

Students seeking admission to the program must demonstrate the ability to communicate receptively and expressively in English with sufficient proficiency to conduct interviews, prepare written reports, and engage in psychotherapy compatible with accepted standards of practice.

Students with prior criminal convictions may experience difficulty in obtaining a license to practice.

Transferring Credits

You can request to transfer up to nine credit hours of applicable coursework from another graduate program toward the USM Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology degree.

The 花椒直播 Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology program is designed to prepare you for licensure as either a professional counselor or a master鈥檚-level psychologist.

Classes are taught by faculty members who have expertise in a variety of mental health areas. Our instructors hold doctorate degrees in counseling or psychology, and most have practiced in the mental health field.
