Admissions Requirements

The admissions criteria for the MSW program are as follows: 

• One fully completed application to the USM MSW Program 
  • Full-time or part-time declaration
• Baccalaureate degree from a college or university accredited by a recognized regional accrediting association
  • A minimum overall grade point average of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale for Regular Standing
  • NOTE: A GPA lower than 2.75 on a 4.0 scale may be considered for Probationary Status Acceptance
• Official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended
• Professional Resume 
• 2 Reference Forms
  
  • One professional reference
  • One academic reference
    • If you graduated from your undergraduate program greater than 7 years ago, you may submit two professional references
• Application Essay 
• Non-refundable $25 Application Fee 

Please Note: MSW academic credit for life experience and previous work experience shall not be given in whole or in part, for courses upon transfer, or in lieu of the field practicum. There are no exemptions from fieldwork based on prior experience.

Reflect on your academic and professional strengths and limitations in relation to the MSW degree and future career in social work. Consider your personal history (personal, professional, or other social service experiences) which contributes to your choice of a social work career. Discuss an understanding of and an identification with the USM MSW program mission, and include information about your values and leadership abilities that will contribute to your success in the USM MSW program and future career in social work.
