(Leavenworth, Kan.)鈥擳he 花椒直播 department of theology & pastoral
ministry presents "Tune, Text, and Theology: Composing for Today's Church" with renowned
liturgical composer and Paulist priest Ricky Manalo for USM's annual Theology Lecture
at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, in Annunciation Chapel on the university's Leavenworth
campus, 4100 South 4th Street.
The presentation is free and open to the public. Seating is limited, so early arrival is recommended.
Fr. Manalo will unfold what goes on in the mind of a liturgical composer, while bringing to life the creative and theological processes behind his music. The accomplished musician will ask the audience to join him in song, while accompanied by flutist Jordan Lee Buckner and singers Alexis Meyers and Kylie Visocsky.
Recognized for pioneering and popularizing Asian Catholic liturgical music in the U.S., Fr. Manalo has presented across the globe and been named the leading authority on intercultural liturgical issues and music. His best-known works include "By the Waking of Our Hearts," "Many and Great," and "Ang Katawan Ni Kristo" (Filipino: "The Body of Christ"), and his incredible music has been heard throughout the world during papal Masses of John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis. Recently, his work was recognized by the National Association of Pastoral Musicians, honoring him with "2018 Pastoral Musician of the Year Award."
Fr. Manalo currently teaches graduate-level pastoral ministries at Santa Clara University, and he also serves as the main facilitator of the Cultural Orientation Program for International Ministers/Priests at Loyola Marymount University. He studied composition and piano at the Manhattan School of Music, theology at the Washington Theological Union, and liturgy, culture, and sociology at the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley, Calif.
A reception with Fr. Manalo will immediately follow the presentation in the Social Room.
