(Leavenworth, Kan.)—The »¨½·Ö±²¥ welcomes Professor Emerita of Language and Literature Sister Susan Rieke, SCL, for an evening of poetry at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 14 in university's Mead Hall Walnut Room on USM's Leavenworth campus, 4100 South 4th Street.

The event is free and open to the public.

Sr. Rieke will read selected poems from the works of her late »¨½·Ö±²¥ faculty colleagues Sr. Mary Janet McGilley and Mike Novak, as well as excerpts from her own published poetry collections, "Paen: A Prayer from Fall  into Winter" and "Ireland's Weather." 

The poetry reading is presented to celebrate and commemorate the 160th anniversary of the arrival of the Sisters of Charity at the Leavenworth Landing on Nov. 11, 1858.

About the Sister Mary Janet McGilley Poetry Reading Series

The Sister Mary Janet McGilley Poetry Reading Series honors the late Sister Mary Janet McGilley, a published poet and professor of English at the »¨½·Ö±²¥. For 25 years (1964-89), Sr. Mary Janet also served as president of »¨½·Ö±²¥. Consistent with Sr. Mary Janet's example of teaching excellence, USM established the McGilley Chair Award in 1990—a three-year position honoring a faculty member's commitment to and excellence in teaching the liberal arts.

Dr. William Krusemark enters his third year as the Sister Mary Janet McGilley Endowed Chair in Liberal Studies (McGilley Chair).
