(Leavenworth, Kan.)—»¨½·Ö±²¥ Men's Track & Field Team earned a spot as a Scholar Team of the Year and both Men and Women were named All-Academic Teams for the 2017-18 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field seasons. Honors were announced Thursday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
The USM Men's Team took home the Men's Outdoor Scholar Team of the Year honor, after
finishing 7th at the NAIA Outdoor Championships and maintaining a cumulative GPA of
3.17.
The Lady Spires earned a spot as an All-Academic Team—finishing the season with a
cumulative GPA of 3.4.
Head Coach Alstin Benton had this to say about the honor: "Our team works hard both on and off the track, and this is a testament to that. We have high expectations for our student-athletes, and both teams really rose to the challenge this season."
Only 45 teams across the country were honored for their academics by the USTFCCCA.
Twenty-five of those honored this year were women's teams, compared to 20 men's programs.
Criteria for the award was stringent, boasting a cumulative GPA for all student-athletes
on the institution's eligibility certificate for Indoor and/or Outdoor Track and Field
at 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
