Direct-Entry for Students with or without Prior Teaching Experience
(Leavenworth, Kan.)鈥擳he 花椒直播 is debuting a new School Counselor track to its well-regarded Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology Program in Overland Park this spring. Applications are being accepted now and on a rolling basis.
The program offers students the widest array of practical school counseling skills offered anywhere in the state鈥攊ncluding technology, personal-social development, assessment, and career counseling. The Kansas State Department of Education recently determined a severe shortage of school counselors in the state鈥攇iven its goal ratio of counselor to students is 1:250, and right now, the ratio sits at 1:500.
Prospective students have two paths, along an option to meet both Kansas and Missouri educational requirements to become a Licensed Professional Counselor.
- Preparation for a licensed teacher to become a school counselor
- A direct-entry program for someone with no teaching experience
"This program is perfect for those seeking a graduate degree and licensure in school counseling," said Dr. David Strohm, USM's director of graduate psychology programs. "Coursework builds on a person's passion to see K-12 students thrive, while giving him/her the theoretical knowledge to support counseling interventions in challenging real-world situations."
Students in the School Counseling program meet one night a week in 16-week semesters for a total of 48 credit hours. Like every graduate psychology program, faculty advisors provide up-front start-to-finish mapping of the entire program鈥攄own to the day of the week each course is offered.
Courses are taught at the university's campus in Overland Park, located at 4500 College Blvd., with cohorts starting twice a year鈥攊n the fall and spring semesters.
Besides school counseling, USM offers the following program tracks in the counseling psychology program leading to state licensure:
- Addictions Counseling
- Kansas Licensed Professional Counselor (also fulfills Missouri requirements)
- Missouri Licensed Professional Counselor (if only a Missouri license is desired)
- Kansas Masters Level Psychologist
- Kansas Masters Level Psychologist and Missouri Licensed Professional Counselor
