Formal Memorandum of Understanding Will Ease Experience for Large Transfer Population

(Leavenworth, Kan.)—The »¨½·Ö±²¥ and Johnson County Community College signed a memorandum of understanding on Aug. 26 aimed at easing the student transfer experience for JCCC students.

The MOU enhances the connection between the two institutions and allows JCCC graduates to transfer up to 96 credit hours to programs at either USM campus. Other benefits include special transfer scholarships for students at USM's Leavenworth campus or tuition discounts for students at USM's Overland Park location.

"USM has long looked for ways to improve the transfer experience for students at local community colleges, particularly when such improvements will allow these students to more quickly and efficiently earn bachelor's degrees in the most cost-effective way possible," Vice President for Marketing and Admissions John Shultz said. "This MOU is a natural outgrowth of that effort – and it's a natural fit."

The agreement and its associated benefits cover students graduating from JCCC with associate of arts or associate of science degrees.

Beyond the financial benefit, these students will enjoy a generous transfer of credit policy, a dedicated counselor, and be considered done with all lower-division general education requirements. What's more, these students will enjoy the same experience – including courses of study, road to completion, and support services – no matter if they attend USM's Leavenworth or Overland Park campus.

There's no limit to the number of students that can take advantage of this partnership. Former JCCC students have made up as much as 10 percent of the USM transfer class in recent years. These students often matriculate to graduation and advance into great careers in a variety of professions.

USM offers about three dozen undergraduate majors in a variety of learning formats. Many of these programs also offer clear – and, in some cases, accelerated – pathways into USM's graduate offerings in business, nursing, education, psychology, and athletic training, as well as the doctorate in physical therapy.
