(Leavenworth, Kan.)—U.S. News & World Report has ranked the »¨½·Ö±²¥ in the  in the Midwest for promoting students' social mobility.

The ranking, which was part of the 2022 U.S. News Best Colleges report, recognizes USM's strength at helping students with significant financial need succeed and graduate â€“ measuring the extent the university enrolled and graduated students who received federal Pell Grants.

Students who receive these grants typically come from households with an annual family income that is less than $50,000. However, most Pell Grant money goes to students with a total family income less than $20,000.

"The »¨½·Ö±²¥ has a long history of serving economically disadvantaged and first-generation students," University President Sister Diane Steele said. "We are proud to be one of the top performers in the region for social mobility. This U.S. News ranking reiterates that »¨½·Ö±²¥ is an institution where students of all backgrounds can learn, excel, and realize their God-given potential."

The social mobility ranking was computed from two factors:

  • The six-year graduation rates of bachelor's degree-seeking new entrants awarded Pell Grants; adjusted to give much more credit to schools with larger Pell student proportions.
  • How closely a school's six-year graduation rate among Pell recipients matches their graduation rates among non-Pell recipients. Schools with larger Pell student proportions also receive more credit.

"Economically disadvantaged students are less likely than others to finish college, even when controlling for other characteristics," U.S. News & World Report wrote in the category description. "But some colleges are more successful than others at advancing social mobility by enrolling and graduating large proportions of disadvantaged students awarded with Pell Grants."

In addition to the social mobility ranking, USM also tied for 101st in the . The complete U.S. News Best Colleges report can be found at .
