Opening Reception 2 p.m. Feb. 9 | Goppert Gallery

(Leavenworth, Kan.)—Andrew Mcilvaine, an assistant professor at the Kansas City Art Institute, will bring his interdisciplinary artwork to the »¨½·Ö±²¥ for a two-month exhibition entitled "Mixed Feelings."

The show is an accumulation of Mcilvaine's work from the past two years and chronicles the creative movement of the artist and his continual longing to understand his identity as a Mexican American.

"Mixed Feelings" is free and open to the public on weekdays from Feb. 9-April 1 in the Xavier Hall Goppert Gallery on USM's Main Campus in Leavenworth – 4100 South 4th Street. USM will host an opening reception at 2 p.m. on Feb. 9.

"The work focuses on notions such as the displacement and replacement of culture, language, and nationality, as well as longing, loss, home, and assimilation," Mcilvaine said. "Through narrative-based work, I reflect on the history of my family seen through a mytho-historical lens while emphasizing the social negotiation of identity within the politics of western civilization. My hope is to speak about the relationship trauma has with shaping memory, identity, and a sense of self â€“ both personally and culturally."

Mcilvaine earned a bachelor's in studio art from the University of Missouri–Kansas City. He then attained an MFA from Washington University in St. Louis in painting and drawing.
