Updates to the University's Winter Weather Procedures

While 2020 has been marked by some disruption to our regular operations, our students, faculty, and staff have also nimbly – and heroically – embraced remote learning and remote work options.

Rather than cancel classes due to snow and ice, in the event of the need to close campus, we will take the following steps this academic year:

  • Classes will be offered remotely rather than canceled due to weather. Faculty will be available and instruct courses remotely.
  • Staff will work remotely where practical. Staff should consult with their supervisors about inclement weather remote work options for their specific positions.
  • If we move to remote classes due to weather, the campus will be deemed closed. Visits and athletic events will be canceled accordingly.

If we move classes to remote delivery because of the weather, we will send out a notification via Textcaster and email. The local media outlets will report this as a "campus closure."

Of course, this is merely our guiding plan for the season – and winter weather can cause all sorts of eventualities. If the weather is severe enough (particularly if there are widespread internet and power outages), USM may cancel classes outright. If the hazardous conditions are milder or fleeting, the university may still call for a delayed start, with campus opening and classes beginning later in the morning.

Regardless: Watch the forecast! If the weather looks threatening, please prepare and be sure you have what you need to work or study with you.
